I told you August 20 about pictures, found on a brand-new iPhone, of a cute and smiling Chinese factory worker. Well, the iPHONE GIRL’S FAME IS GROWING. Now, the media has pinpointed her location. She works for a Taiwanese contractor called Foxconn hired by Apple to manufacture iPhones in the mainland Chinese city of Shenzhen. A Foxconn representative contacted by the Chinese news agency CRI said that it’s “likely that the test photos were left in the phone’s memory ‘accidentally.’” Which isn’t really likely at all. What are the chances that factory workers pose and smile for every one of the 10 million iPhones they test?

A company called NOR_/D (a self-described “research and development studio… in the area of art, architecture, and system design.”) is now selling an inexpensive development kit for building Apple iPhone-like or Microsoft Surface-like multi-touch applications. The kit includes a FULL-SIZE TOUCH SCREEN and is for anyone with C++ skills and $1,580. (Here comes the VIDEO!)

A smattering of blogs reported since Friday that “the world’s first projector phone” had become available for purchase on the Gadget Craver Web site. None of the posts I saw mentions the elephant in the living room: The phone has a FAKE iPHONE USER INTERFACE. The main picture shows iPhone icons, etc., and a secondary photo reveals the use of the iPhone’s “shutter” animation when taking photos. Two other weirdnesses: 1) the catalog photo shows only Chinese in the UI; and 2) another photo shows the phone held sideways, not sitting flat, while projecting.

There’s an offensive joke in here somewhere. Poland’s largest telecom, called Telekomunikacja Polska, admitted today to hiring “hip-looking film” actors to STAND IN LINE for the recent iPhone launch.
